Groden aluminum rods, Wiseco 1400HD pistons, Brian Crower 280 cams,
A-1 headbolts, Fel-Pro head gasket, ACL race bearings

$2,000 worth of parts don`t take up a whole lot of space.

Still missing: Tail BOV, ATI damper

The motor`s out and it`s at the machine shop for prep.

The build this year has been painfully slow. I finally get the rods and now the machinist is going on vacation. A couple of more weeks delay.

I`ll post some pics when I get back on schedule with the build.

I finally got a weekend off, and found a little time for the Conquest. First, on the list was the rear diff. Drained the old heavy shockproof and found bits of metal again. At least the chunks were smaller this time. New seals were installed. All those broken axles are tough on seals.

Axle comparison:
The stock axles are big when compared to DSM 4 bolts. The DSS axles weigh in at 20lbs each!

I have another heavy work schedule this week. So, I`ll have to wait until next weekend to work on these:

It's looking awful nasty Bill, can't wait to see the outcome of the rebuild.

BTW, I found a Shootout '07 video on Streetfire last night and the Quest had about 20 appearances in the 10 minute video. Local celebrity I guess.

I`ve gotten behind the 8 ball, but I`m continuing this thread just to show that the parts in the Conquest are nothing fancy. If I can do this, anybody can.

The aluminum rods I waited so long for, had to be machined. The rod end caps were too big, and would hit the crankshaft brace, girdle, whatever you call it. This pic shows the clearance after machining.

Oil squirters removed.
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q296/u2slow/08rebuild004.jpg

New holes on the crankshaft counterweights from re-balancing.
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q296/u2slow/08rebuild005.jpg

If you look closely where the water pump mounts, you can see that the coolant passages have been filled almost to the top of the outlets. Also a freeze plug where the balance shaft used to be.
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q296/u2slow/08rebuild006.jpg

The oil bypass relief valve hole is now larger than it was.
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q296/u2slow/08rebuild007.jpg

A plate covers the area where the water pump used to be.
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q296/u2slow/08rebuild010.jpg

This isn`t a real good pic, but you might be able to see how dented oil pan is from all the aborted wheel stands.
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q296/u2slow/08rebuild011.jpg

This is the timing belt sprocket that is part of the new ATI damper. No more OEM sprocket.

Pretty blue timing belt.

ATI damper mounted.
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q296/u2slow/08rebuild016.jpg

To be continued.......

Lookin' good Bill!

That's interesting about the clearance of the aluminum rods, any issues to be worried about there with a little less material?

Yea, it caught me by surprise Surprised

Shep runs these rods along with a lot of other big HP DSMs. I`ve never heard of this being a problem. It didn`t just rub a little. I`d say about .200 was cut off. All four were machined to match.

I waited so long to get them, I wasn`t going to send them back. Groden`s weird to deal with. If he hadn`t promised me 2 week delivery, I would be running something else. I`ll probably never do business with Groden again.

Hell, I`ve got all kinds of concerns. It`s the things I never think of that bite me in the ass Embarassed

If I remember right. I think they machined the engine parts for clearance, instead of the rods on mine.

Ruh Raw.......This was a decision I made. Those braces looked like they would lose a lot of strength if they were cut down. My machinist had already had an unplesant conversation with Groden about the dowel pin hole. Groden had already told me that I wouldn`t have any clearance issues when he made the sale to me. After waiting six weeks, I made frequent calls for him to send me my rods. I figured that in the rush, that he just missed cutting down the rod ends. How did you come about your decision to cut the brace?

Here`s a shot of the GM adapter plate after mounting.

My flexplate`s getting rusty.

A few shots inside of my tiny garage. I have to open the garage door, and push the car part of the way out the door to put the motor/tranny in the car. Just enough room to get the job done. No fancy shop here!!

I don't know which way I would have gone with the rods Bill. That brace is important. If you had had more time you might have been able to get a girdle from Kiggly and then shave the stock brace instead of the rods. I hope it all works out for you.

Not that you need another one but I saw where a guy on projectzerog.com is starting to make adapter plates and is going to be much cheaper than Buschur. He's got it about 90% lined out. Just thought that was a note worthy sidebar for anyone looking at this thread in the future.

I`m concerned about the rods. I still have a set of Eagles. I`ve never put a rod through a block and I never want to.

I think you`re talking about Bill Hincher. I sent him a converter and an adapter plate a few months ago. hmmm

looks rowdy as fawk. I bet that thing is mean on the track. I wanted to swap a 4g63 into a Mitsubishi Mighty Max for some 4g63 RWD fun but I think a Starion would be a better route for sure. Car looks great man!

Bill,
I'm running an 86 quest with the 2.6 motor and just snapped the driver side half shaft this past weekend at MIR. Do you have any info or a contact for the DSS axles? I called today and they gave me a price of $2K for a custom set. I can do an 8.8 swap for less than that.

Just put another factory back in. I doubt you are running enough power through the 2.6 to need some DSS axles.

Hoquest (on the board) ran one of the higher (if not the highest) HP 2.6s for a while and never had any axle problems. For that matter, his current setup hasn't given any problems with drag radials, 450+ hp & tq, and many many drag passes.

BTW...

In the future start a new thread with questions like these. That way when someone searches for info about "Starquest axles", they'll have better luck finding help. Wink

Welcome to our board.

I have no special contact info. I can tell you that they stand behind their product. They do not sponsor me.

My car is an `89 model with 6 bolt axles. Don`t the `86 models have the smaller 4 bolts? You might consider the 6 bolt swap if you can find the stock axles.

Other things to consider:
My car weighs 2650 lbs and has a 4.875 gear ratio. I never launch over 5000 RPM or 30lbs. boost. Axles snapped like dried twigs whenever I attempted to launch at higher RPM. You just have to compromise a few things with the IRS Sad

To be honest, I expect something to break every time I launch. Luck has been with me Wink

Bill,
I watched you run at MIR a few years ago I think you ran a low 9 with your first wheel stand of about 30 feet. In fact I have it on video some where.

I remember your car when Eric first put it up for sale thinking it was a great buy and you have certainly taken it to the next level.

As for my car with me in it I'm at 3230lbs and leave the line at 3600 on drag radials. I've upgraded to an 89 rear with the 6 bolt axles and put a 3:90 ring and pinion in. So far this year I've been through a clutch , drive shaft and now half shaft. I'm not making the power you are but when stuff breaks I hate putting the same thing back in. Just wondering how much abuse the stock axles will take. I've seen a few cars run low 10's high 9's with the stock axles. So I guess I'll just clean up the rear and stuff with the stockers and grab up a few spares. I think before I spend $2k on half shafts I'll do a straight axle conversion.

Thanks for the info.

The run you are talking about was on stock axles Mr. Green

I think the weight of your car with that gear ratio puts a lot more stress on the driveline.

I will run the IRS until it falls apart. This video shows why. Check out how much I move the steering wheel rock
http://videos.streetfire.net/video/in-car-fun_178074.htm

Replacing the IRS for 2 grand is a hell of a deal, IMO. I will probably have to do it at some point.

Please keep us informed on the progress of your car. What works for you might work for me too!
